How She Styled It – Carolyn Hsu

The Tyler made an appearance today on Carolyn Hsu’s personal style blog, The Hsu Closet. There must be something in the air because it is part of a DIY feature she did today and I’m in the middle of a few of my own this week after doing a project with my mentee!

Carolyn took a beautiful Hermes scarf which she folded into a triangle and then tied two sides that made up the tip around Tyler. What a creative new way to wear your piece! How chic is this?

Want a Tyler of your own? Who wouldn’t?! Shop for it on www.jasminepennamma.com $275, and in a multitude of colors and finishes!

Rudy Red Slippers

Wile most of the country was holed up due to rain or ….gasp….snow, I was out and about in sunny Los Angeles contemplating Halloween ideas. Being gone the other week totally took me off track and needless to say most of my other ideas were sold out. Black Swan, Troop Beverly Hills, Zombie Housewife. I managed to snag the last small Dorothy since I had enough glitter and glue left over from my skates to make her famous Ruby Red Slippers fit for a jewelry designer!

Have a safe and Haute Halloween! I’ll be at the West Hollywood Halloween parade tonight. What about you?!

Letting go of my skinny jeans

I had these jeans I bought when I first moved to NYC back when my alarm would ring at 5am and I’d start my gym workouts by taking the stairs to the top of my 50 floor building, Madison Belvedere, and lived off party food and free drinks. I was mildly obsessive with my salad picking habit because I was working at a commercial casting company and seeing gorgeous glamazons day in and day out on top of trying to start a commercial career of my own.

I haven’t been really big on working out and loosing a particular amount of weight, but instead have held on to these jeans as my marker of what I want to get down to. Fast forward to January of this year and I was really starting to think it may be time to let go of my skinny jeans because NOTHING I was doing was going to let me shimmy or shake my way into those bad boys. Talk about depressing. The next thing I knew it was Feb 1 and I had gained 4 lbs instead of loosing anything. WTF! I decided to tuck my jeans in the back my closet and just go cold turkey with good ol’ diet and exercise because I was determined to whittle myself back down to a 26 on my #roadto30 and drop 15-20lbs.

(one of the tasty French meals)

After spending the week in France last week, I also came back 4lbs heavier, but if I wasn’t running every morning, I could have seen that getting totally out of control with all of my croissants, macaroons, wine, espressos, and cheese. Did I mention all the pate?! (Basically ground meat and FAT!) I kind of overindulged, but I got better at being able to try something I really wanted and enjoy it versus eating it until it was gone just to clean my plate. Aside from all my snacking, my actual meals were mostly fish (never had so many sea creatures in one week) and lots and lots of veggie so I didn’t completely go overboard.

(Lots of espresso to catch up on the time zone adjustment.)

I got back and decided to take the next few days to chill out and get back to juicing carrots and beets and try to ween myself back from drinking at every meal. This morning I decided why not see how close I am to being able to put on my skinny jeans. Guess what….THEY DON’T FIT, but this time they are too loose! I can’t wait to go shopping this weekend for a new pair of jeans to hold on to as my new skinnies, and finally let go of my old skinny jeans for a good reason! With about two more months to go on my #roadto30, I’m now officially down 30lbs since the beginning on the year! I think I’m scheduling a beach vacay to bring in my 30s next year and stay accountable for this fitness kick I’ve been on! Take that skinny jeans!

Stop and Smell the Roses of Paris

The streets of Paris are one never-ending breath of inspiration. The streets of Paris were obviously transformed into a daily catwalk, but that’s a whole other blog! A chilly morning run through Parisian streets was worth being able to drink in the beauty of the city on uncrowded streets. The French brought new meaning to “stop and smell the roses” as they had just as many floral shops as bakeries. The Parisians I met explained that life is best enjoyed everyday and not to just wait for a special moment to celebrate it. So while I’ve fallen from my habit of picking up flowers at the LA flower market downtown, I’m going to take my French lesson seriously and be sure to fit it in next Saturday morning.

Enjoy some of the beautiful shops!

Are You Not Entertained??!

Purchased every French mag I could get my hands on. (I’ve got a thing for foreign fashion magazines, but boy are they weighing down my bag!)

I promise not to rant about having two Delta flights with no in flight tv/entertainment centers. 11.5 hours in the air……no plug, no tv, and of course I bought a gogo flight 24 hour package for wi-fi because I just knew I would be online researching a French plan of action and catching up on emails playing around on twitter. Le Sigh.

Grabbing a few of these for my flight was my only saving grace!

At the end of the day, WHO CARES? I’m in France! After a rocky start of nothing to do on a flight leaving an entertainment mecca, I finally reached CDG where I started to already question if I had enough luggage space because even the airport shops were too tempting! Luckily I had a short layover on my way to southern France so I couldn’t do too much damage.

More to come!

DIY: Photoshoot Glitter Bombs

So little known fact: I can not skate on any of those inline skate creations. I’ve been on top of my fitness game these past few months, but I’ve been dying to go skating by the beach. I decided to try and find a retro pair of skates with four wheels and cross my fingers learning how to skate on one of those again was a little like the never forgetting how to ride a bike saying.

After a few weeks of random googling, it was clear no one was really selling these ancient beasts anymore. And whenever I could find them….they looked cray cray. Since I go nuts for anything glittered, I decided to just go to The Goodwill (made my Dad proud I’m sure!) and see if I could find an old pair of skates to DIY to my liking and totally scored on my first try at a Goodwill on 3rd.

They started out as a ugly old pair from LA Gear (how fitting), which I spray painted black (outdoors only people!), mixed some mod podge with black glitter to apply all over (I sprinkled a little extra glitter all over and covered with mod podge for the 2nd coat), and then voila. Dunzo! And because I’ve got a wide range of randomness in my bejeweled lair, I added some pearl chain where there used to be laces!

So far, I haven’t actually taken these suckers to the street, but I did get excited when I saw them finished and used it as a prop for the front photos in my website. And yes, I did try rolling around in them for a hot second until I came to the conclusion that I was two seconds from falling flat on my face. Maybe I’ll make some fashionable knee pads next as I’m sure people can find multiple uses for them…..*straight face*

How She Styled It: Carolyn Hsu

Carolyn Hsu, the fashion forward co-founder and editor of THE DAILY OBSESSION, also started her own personal style blog, THE HSU CLOSET. Since starting THE DAILY OBSESSION six years ago back before the blog movement, the site has now bloomed into a powerhouse pulling in over 200k readers a month! How this superwomen has the time to manage THE HSU CLOSET on top of it is beyond me. I knew someone learned how to multitask without sleep! Im trying to get there.

Much like myself, Hsu started on a more corporate path, but working at Microsoft just didn’t satisfy her once the fashion bug took a bite! Always a fan of THE DAILY OBSESSION, I’m excited to start reading THE HSU CLOSET and honored she has featured some JASMINE PENNAMMA pieces in the outfits she’s worn lately.
